Synopsis

opened January 20, 2001 A poignant and raucously skewed view of suburban bliss After years of baking and folding and coaxing and nurturing, Miriam Buddwing dreams of escaping her family. Today is her birthday and she isn't sure she wants to celebrate. Her eldest son Will is a poet who has been hiding in the woods, her youngest son, Doug is a cop with an itchy trigger finger and she worries that Sannie, her teenage daughter wants to be a lounge singer. Add to that a husband dying too slowly in the next room, an Ecuadorian nurse who has seen the Virgin Mary and a reluctant estate lawyer and you have The Ordinary Yearning of Miriam Buddwing. In a new play commissioned by Steppenwolf Theatre, playwright Alexandra Gersten-Vassilaros lets loose on marriage, motherhood and the ties that bind.
