Synopsis

Opened February, 1999 Coincidence? Or Fate? Disappeared is a beautifully written, cleverly structured thriller about the chaos surrounding a crime that may or may not have happened. Sarah Casey, a young sexy travel agent in New York City, goes missing from a bar in Hell's Kitchen. Her partner in abduction or escape is Elston Rupp, a creepy character whose work in a thift shop allows him to assume the identities of his customers. Was she killed? Or did her chance meeting with a stranger give her the courage to escape and shed her past? Nagy provides no easy answers, nor message to take home, but an open door to new thoughts about the society we live in, and the people with whom we come into contact every single day. The gripping mystery is not so much an end in itself, as an opportunity to explore the swirl of big city anonymity, and the texture of the lives surrounding the missing girl. Disappeared premiered at the Haymarket Studio Theater in Lecester, and was subsequently produced at the Royal Court Theater in London. Roadworks' production of Disappeared at the Steppenwolf Studio marks its US Premiere. Abigail Deser, Director and Roadworks' Ensemble Member, directed the Chicago Premiere of Patrick Marber's Dealer's Choice for Roadworks; participated in the '97 Lincoln Center's Directors Lab, and began her work in Chicago as assistant director to Robert Falls.
