How do I submit my artwork?
A complete application includes 1–5 samples of previous artworks and an explanation of what you are proposing as a commission for The Loft. Please use the link at steppenwolf.org/LTAP to access the application.
Do I still own my artwork even if it's housed at Steppenwolf?
Yes! Your work still belongs to you. The agreement of the commission is that your work will be displayed for a period of one (1) year and returned to you afterwards. If Steppenwolf Education is interested in permanently acquiring your artwork, you will be contacted after the LTAP.
Are there requirements for what our artwork needs to be about?
We are interested in artworks that explore the unique feelings of joy, hope and diversity, which are often found in relationship to community. Artists are encouraged to reflect on what the future of Chicago’s communities could look like and submit artworks that feel authentic to themselves.
How much is the commission?
For individual artist submissions, the cash prize is $1500. For group submissions (two or more artists working together on one piece of artwork), the cash prize is $2500.
I am an undocumented or international artist. Am I eligible for the commission?
Yes! Steppenwolf LTAP will accept submissions from undocumented and international youth artists. If selected as a finalist, we will work with them to determine the best options for commission winnings.
Can Steppenwolf transport my artwork?
Yes. Steppenwolf will work with the artists to transport their art piece to The Loft.
Can I submit more than one piece?
If you are submitting more than one piece, the pieces should be similar in subject or medium.
How long will my artwork be exhibited at Steppenwolf?
Winning selections will be exhibited in The Loft for a period of one (1) year after the installation date.
When will I know if my artwork was picked?
All artists submissions will be notified no later than July 31, 2021 via the email address provided on the application.
Is there a specific type of artform my work should take (photographs, drawings, etc.)?
The LTAP is open to all visual mediums. This includes but is not limited to photography, graffiti, collage, sculptures, drawings and graphic arts.
Who will see this artwork?
Artworks will be exhibited in The Loft at 1650 N. Halsted St. This is the new Liz and Eric Lefkofsky Arts and Education Center, which will be accessible to teens, theater patrons, Steppenwolf partners and Steppenwolf staff.
Are there any restrictions on what the artwork can look like or what it can contain?
We want your artistic voice in The Loft. Your work must be original and not previously published. Here are some things to keep in mind that could lead to disqualification: The use of profanity, hate speech or homophobic, racist, sexist or xenophobic language and imagery are strictly prohibited. Plagiarism and work that violates US Copyright Law will lead to disqualification. Logos, slogans or other forms of advertisement are also prohibited.
Will Steppenwolf help provide a canvas or materials?
Steppenwolf Education will provide support for acquiring supplies and materials for the selected artists.
