Kent Cubbage

Kent Cubbage got his first scale rule when he was eight, and he’s been happily messing around with colors, lines, and lights ever since. This year, his theatrical designs will be onstage with Steppenwolf Garage Rep, Tennessee Shakespeare Company, Seattle Shakespeare Company, Book-It Repertory, and Taproot Theater, and his large-scale interactive art will be displayed at two galleries and three events. In Chicago, he’s designed for The New Colony, Prologue, Collaboraction, and Mortar, and assisted at Chicago Shakespeare, The Court, and the Marriott. Further from home, his designs at Seattle Shakespeare have been nominated for a Gregory Award and designated the Seattle Weekly Play of the Year; in Minneapolis, he designed the Skylark Opera Festival and assisted at the Guthrie (including on “The Scottsboro Boys,” which was nominated for twelve Tonys); in New Jersey, he designed at New Jersey Shakespeare Theater and assisted at the McCarter. Other assists include New York City Center, ACT, the 5th Avenue, and more. He also taught a lighting design course for Seattle University. His concert career has included designs for Cake, Andrew Bird, Tegan and Sara, Cloud Cult, and Ghostface Killah. Fresh out of grad school in 2011, he won spots in the Prague Quadrennial Exposition and the USITT Exposition, and became a Fulbright finalist. Like every other artist of his generation, he enjoys bikes, homebrewing, Burning Man culture, and makerspaces, although he has no free time to speak of.
