Interview with Sarah Gubbins

What’s the first thing you do when you sit down to write a play? Sarah Gubbins: Plug in my headphones. What’s the last thing you do before you hit the print button for your “final draft”? SG: Tell myself I can always rewrite later. Are you conscious of when you hit the middle of the process? What does that moment look like? SG: From the moment I start writing-that’s the middle; the beginning takes place in the thinking and fantasizing about the play and the end never comes. What techniques do you use to overcome your own personal writer’s block? SG: Clean the house. Are there any “rookie moves” that you think writers sometimes fall into? SG: Not pushing through the awful drafts. How long would your dream writing process for a single play take? SG: Totally depends on the play. But at least a year. maybe two.
