ABOUT THIS SHOW

Songs For Someone Loyal is an emotional and musical show dedicated to Counterfit Madison's relationships with three people: first, her dad, a Nigerian immigrant whose deportation forced her to reckon with her identity as a Black American; second, her chosen ancestor, Nina Simone, whose life eerily echoes Madison's, whose music became a balm throughout the last 10 years or so of American living; and third, herself, a gay ass first-generation Nigerian-American woman-ish who has attempted to make sense of the way she loses, yearns and loves.

About Counterfit Madison

Counterfeit Madison, is the musical manifestation of Sharon Udoh. Udoh (they/she) is a gay, first-generation Nigerian-American composer, pianist, arranger bandleader, and vocalist based in Chicago. Their work abandons genre and is expansive, and tells stories of human complexity, chaos and connection. She sometimes takes the stage under the name Counterfeit Madison; their performances are magnetic, dangerous, and kind, and her work has been commissioned by New York City Gay Men's Chorus, Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles, Portland Lesbian Chorus, Atlanta Women's Chorus and D-Composed Chicago.
