Alex Klotowitz

Alex Kotlowitz is best known for his award-winning nonfiction book, There Are No Children Here. Kotlowitz received the Helen B. Bernstein Award for Excellence in Journalism and the Carl Sandburg Award and a Christopher Award. It was the subject of a 1993 television film for ABC starring Oprah Winfrey and was listed as one of the 150 most important books of the century by The New York Public Library. Formerly a staff writer for the Wall Street Journal, Kotlowitz covered urban affairs and social policy. His investigative articles appear regularly in such national magazines as The New Yorker and The New York Times Sunday Magazine. Kotlowitz participated in the University of Oregon's Literary Nonfiction program in January, 2000 when he conducted a workshop entitled Writing About Children. He speaks on college campuses and has been writer-in residence at Northwestern University, and a Distinguished Visitor at the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. He also received the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award and the George Polk Award.
