1700 Theatre Technical Posse Member

Steppenwolf Theatre Company is seeking candidates for the occasional, part-time position of 1700 Theatre Technical Posse Member to assist and fill in for the Technical Coordinator as needed.

The 1700 Theatre is home to LookOut: Steppenwolf’s performance series that presents the work of artists and companies across genre and form. Each night is different: music, dance, theatre, improv, and the occasional collaboration with a Chicago storefront theatre for a longer running production. The theatre is staffed separately from the larger Upstairs and Downstairs Theatres next door; the space boasts one full-time technician who coordinates load-in, rehearsal, performances, and load-out. We are seeking Chicago theatre technicians to assist the Technical Coordinator on an occasional basis.

The 1700 Theatre Technical Posse will consist of 4-5 members with different and overlapping technical knowhow, from carpentry and run crew to projections, lights, and sound. They will staff lighting calls, carpentry calls, load-in and load-out, and cover shows for the 1700 Technical Coordinator on an as-needed basis.

The schedule varies and is intended to fit into a freelance technician’s variable calendar. All Posse members will be required to attend a quarterly staff meeting, but other calls are on an as-needed basis; Posse members will likely work no more than ten hours a month.

This is an exciting and malleable way to be involved with a rich, everchanging lineup of performance.

Posse members will collaborate with the Technical Coordinator to:

  • Hang and focus lights
  • Hang speakers
  • Hang and focus projectors
  • Reconfigure the theatre’s riser system as needed for performances
  • Make the space available to artists for performances or rehearsals
  • Perform necessary lighting, sound, and occasional projection checks pre-show
  • Perform short techs/sound checks with performers
  • Run lighting/sound/projection for shows
  • Power down and secure space at the end of the night after the space is clear

Qualified candidates:

  • Have expertise in one or more of the following areas:
    • Sound tech
    • Lighting tech
    • Projections and video tech
    • Carpentry and properties
    • Are excellent communicators and calm under pressure
    • Are detail oriented
    • Can work with a variety of artists and performers with quick turnaround times

The posse will work at various times and days of the week, and evening and weekend hours are certain.

This position is $15.81 an hour. Excellent benefit package offered for part time employees, including dental, vision, employee assistance program and a 401(k) matching retirement program.

Note: There is no minimum guarantee of work, but rather we are looking to create a call list of qualified persons who will receive necessary training in the space and its technical elements, and then be called in as-needed based on their availability.
