Join historian and acclaimed photographer Carlos Flores and DJ Julio Bishop for this one-night only event exploring the rich history Puerto Rican culture in Chicago. Mr. Flores will present “PUERTORICANCHICAGO MUSIC SCENE & NEIGHBROHOODS,” an overview of Puerto Rican history in the city from 1950 through 1990 with a special focus on the Lincoln Park neighborhood, while DJ Julio Bishop spins records from the period drawn from his storied, one-of-a-kind collection.

PUERTORICANCHICAGO MUSIC SCENE & NEIGHBROHOODS - (1950 - 1990) This presentation/discussion will focus on the beginning of the arrival of Puerto Ricans to Chicago in 1946, and how they settled in various neighborhoods from the south to the north side. It will briefly address how Puerto Ricans established businesses/organizations as they settled into various neighborhoods in the city. These business and organizations provided the community with an element of entertainment, i.e. restaurants, night clubs, social clubs (civic organizations), local bars and dance halls. In addition, the presentation will illustrate how Puerto Ricans became pioneers on radio and local television to entertain and maintain an informed community. The presentation will also briefly focus on the continual settlement & dispersement of different neighborhoods. The discussion will focus on the Lincoln Park neighborhood where Puerto Ricans had a significant presence during the 1960’s thru the 1980’s, and where Carlos Flores lived/grew up and photographed the community at large. Mr. Flores will be sharing several of the images he captured while residing in the neighborhood of Lincoln Park.
