About This Show
Blind drummer, composer and bandleader Tommy Carroll presents a suite of his compositions that fuse the emotional freedom of jazz with the earthiness of roots music and the adventurousness of contemporary sound art. Tommy will briefly discuss his textural narrative-based approach to composition, which goes beyond conventional sheet music to build personal bonds between performers and audience. An interactive segment of the performance will give audience members the chance to hear snippets of their daily lives transmuted into sound.
Tommy is a Chicago-based drummer, producer and composer with an ability to imbue music with emotional depth and improvisational dexterity. An in demand drummer for rappers, songwriters and experimental metal artists alike, Tommy leads his own group that has showcased at venues and galleries across Chicago including MCA Chicago, the Hideout, Sleeping Village, AMFM, Elastic Arts and Café Mustache. His 2018 album, Calculated Discomfort, sets cosmic jazz to the arc of personal growth and self-realization. His 2017 album Not Amazing addresses his experiences as a blind adult through beats, improvisation, and song.
Tommy has a background in journalism and seeks to tell a story with every creative project he touches. Years of playing in DIY bands while holding down various jobs and school commitments have inspired Tommy to create immersive sonic experiences that speak to everyday life.
