University Night: Putting the Radio Play Back in the Spotlight - ENCORE!

Wednesday, march 31

7pm CDT, Online Event

We had a great turnout for our first virtual University Night in February, so we are giving it an encore! If you missed the first one—or just want to learn all you can about radio plays—please join us for this discussion!

With COVID-19 preventing live, in-person performances from taking place, the radio play is making a comeback. From serialized, narrative podcasts to short works meant for an audio-only format, more and more theatremakers are returning to this decades-old format to tell new stories for our current moment. What are the unique challenges and opportunities for this medium, and how should artists think about telling their stories when the only tools available are sound and music?

Join us on Wednesday, March 31 at 7pm CDT to hear Artistic Producer Patrick Zakem talk about his experience producing radio plays at Steppenwolf in the past year. Throughout his time working on The American Clock, Animal Farm and Wally WorldPatrick has learned how to take a script that was meant for the stage and make it come to life for an "ears-only" experience. We’ll wrap up the event with an opportunity for you to ask questions about theatre-making in a digital world.

This event is FREE and open to all university students. The world needs the next generation of artists now more than ever. Therefore, to provide further inspiration for what is possible in digital theatre-making, we will give all attendees a promo code for free access to a Steppenwolf NOW virtual membership ($75 value). With this offer, you can see Wally World, our latest radio play, in action along with all of our other virtual productions!
