The 1700 Theatre is our newest theater, a casual, intimate and flexible 80-seat theater dedicated to showcasing the work of our ensemble and emerging local theater companies. The 1700 Theatre is also home to LookOut, our performance series presenting a wide variety of genres and shows, from dance to live music to spoken word and beyond.
Seating note: the furthest row from the stage is comprised of 12 high stools. All other seating is standard chairs.
Lobby & Amenities
The 1700 Theatre is located immediately behind Front Bar: Coffee and Drinks, our 2,500 square ft. café & bar. More than a lobby space, Front Bar is a creative space where guests can grab a drink, have a bite, or meet up with friends and collaborators, day or night.
By day, the café & bar space is a warm neighborhood hub serving artisanal La Colombe coffee and espresso, with breakfast pastry, fresh salads and sandwiches by Goddess and the Grocer. Evening bar service features local craft beer, wine and signature cocktails, with Goddess small plates and desserts.
The 1700 Theater was created to be a casual, intimate and flexible space presenting a wide variety of genres and shows, from dance to live music to spoken word and beyond. The diverse programming provides current and new audience members with a variety of multidisciplinary cultural experiences with the added Steppenwolf stamp of approval.
"Steppenwolf started as a group of friends performing risk-taking work in a small basement space in Highland Park. This new theater space echoes those beginnings, providing opportunities for our ensemble members to experiment in a black box setting without the pressure and restrictions of a mainstage run. It also opens the door to new, diverse artists, companies and a variety of performance styles, in turn welcoming new audiences into our home," shares Steppenwolf Artistic Director Anna D. Shapiro.
With the new black box, the 80-seat Garage Theatre transitions to an event and rehearsal space. The new theater allows Steppenwolf to expand on the mission and programming of the Garage Theatre, presenting a wider representation of voices, including visiting companies and a mix of local and national artists.
The 1700 Theatre is located at 1700 N Halsted.
