Rendering of Steppenwolf's new arts education building

building on excellence: meet the project

Join us for a virtual site tour

Founded in 1974, Steppenwolf Theatre Company has become one of the most influential theatres in the world, defining what it means to be a world-class ensemble theatre. Since then, and through over a decade of deep investigation, Steppenwolf Theatre’s Board of Trustees, staff, artistic ensemble, and donors were led to undertake a $73 million capital campaign to expand and reimagine Steppenwolf’s campus.

Flash forward to now – we are in Phase 2 of our three-part plan including three new or remodeled theatres, three new and welcoming social spaces, and an entire floor dedicated to teen education. When we’re done, Chicago will have a gorgeous, new flagship theatre arts campus that invites the international community to experience one of the most meaningful aspects of Chicago’s character: its willingness to innovate in service of a diverse and thriving culture.

And we want to share our progress with you. Each month, we’ll virtually go with you into the new space, share updates as they are being built, and answer your questions in real time about the Building on Excellence campaign. Space is limited for this conversation each month so please sign up now if you'd like to be in-the-know!
