building on excellence: meet the project

Founded in 1974, Steppenwolf Theatre Company has become one of the most influential theatres in the world, defining what it means to be a world-class ensemble theatre. Since then, through over a decade of deep investigation, Steppenwolf Theatre’s Board of Trustees, staff, artistic ensemble, and donors were led to undertake a $73 million capital campaign to expand Steppenwolf’s impact on Chicago and evolve its relationship with audiences, artists, teens, and culture-makers around the world.
As Steppenwolf nears the final phase of construction on its reimagined campus and Chicago begins to emerge from the isolation of the pandemic, the company is thrilled to introduce and update folks on the magnificent spaces awaiting their return to the theatre. The campus will include three distinct and right-sized theatres for generative artists of our day, three dedicated spaces purposefully built for teen learning and creation, and three vibrant and welcoming social spaces for the community. Chicago’s new flagship theatre arts and education campus will welcome 10,000 more teens and 50,000 more audience members, while strengthening the business model and inviting innovation and communion in service of a diverse culture.
We would love to share our progress with you. Join us as we go virtually into the new space, share updates as they are being built, and answer your questions in real-time about the Building on Excellence campaign. Space is limited for this conversation each month so please sign up now if you'd like to be in-the-know!
