Steppenwolf
WORK WITH USUSHERING

VOLUNTEERING AS AN USHER is a great way for theatre lovers of all ages (and all budgets) to go behind the scenes and see a Steppenwolf play for FREE – we're always looking for responsible and friendly people to help us welcome our audience to productions in all three of our theatres: Upstairs, Downstairs and Garage.

In order to guarantee the best and most consistent level of patron service, Steppenwolf Theatre Company partners with The Saints to coordinate volunteer ushers for each of our three theatre spaces. While Saints get priority placement for the months leading up to a run, you don't have to be a member of The Saints to usher - non-Saints may begin signing up for shifts two weeks prior to the first preview performance of a run.

Duties and Attire

Ushers are typically called to the theatre 75 minutes prior to the curtain time of a production (though this may vary according to the needs of the play), and are expected (unless otherwise noted) to wear clean, pressed, black and white semi-formal attire.

Duties include inserting marketing materials into programs; learning about the seating chart and theatre protocol through a brief orientation; tearing tickets and helping guests find their seats; picking up the theatre space following the performance; and, most importantly, helping make each patron's stay as pleasant as possible.

How to Sign Up

When e-mailing a request to usher, please make it easy to schedule you (we receive hundreds of e-mails) by always including:

  • desired performance dates
  • number and names of all people in your party
  • a phone number at which you can be reached
