WORK WITH USPROFESSIONAL LEADERSHIP

SINCE 1984, STEPPENWOLF THEATRE COMPANY has been committed to the professional training of early-career arts administration and production professionals. Professional Leadership programs house The Apprenticeship, The Summer Internship and The African-American Fellowship. Each year, these nationally respected programs attract over 250 candidates for 38 positions in the company’s administration and production departments.

Professional Leadership programs provide hands–on experience to those wanting to learn about the inner workings of professional theater from every angle. Participants work in administrative or production departments while Steppenwolf staff and artists function as mentors, guiding and instructing interns as they make the transition from student to professional. Through daily assignments and duties with a given department, professional development, volunteer opportunities and free tickets to productions, participants are offered the chance to learn from the finest professionals working in theater today.

The goals of Steppenwolf's Professional Leadership programs are to:

  • Provide formalized and comprehensive training in arts administration and production
  • Prepare each participant to become a leader in her/his profession
  • Foster mentor/ mentee relationships between staff members and program participants
  • Promote a 'culture of learning' in Steppenwolf's administration
  • The Apprenticeship is geared towards young professionals who are looking to bridge the gap between their education and the professional world. They will work closely with our staff to learn about the workings of their department and throughout their time here they will gain necessary skills and understanding to be the best candidates being introduced in the field.

The Summer Internship is for students looking for an introduction to professional theatre administration and production. These students can receive credit from their learning institutions while gaining hands-on experience with some of the top professionals in American Theatre.
