The Downstairs Theatre, which opened with the production of Ronald Harwood's Another Time iin 1991, is a 515-seat theater with a producing capacity to rival much larger houses. In the Downstairs Theatre, audiences have seen a string quartet apparently floating above the stage space (A Clockwork Orange), a street awash with rain (Three Days of Rain) and life-sized cars enter the space (I Just Stopped By to See the Man). Our audiences have seen characters cross a tow-bridge over the audience (Berlin Circle), characters descend into the grave (Everyman), characters emerge from the voms underneath the audience (Hedda Gabler); these are but a few of the myriad of amazements that the Downstairs Theatre offers to Steppenwolf artists and audiences.

Co-productions with visiting companies have also presented in the Downstairs Theatre, such as Wedding Band, produced with Congo Square Theatre Company, and Tennessee Williams' One Arm, presented by Steppenwolf Theatre Company, About Face Theatre and Tectonic Theater Project.
