THE VISITING COMPANY INITIATIVE

2010-2011 Garage Repertory: Chicago Companies

Steppenwolf Theater Company's 2010-2011 Visiting Companies Initiative will again take the form of a repertory of three Chicago Companies. As part of its Garage Series, the Garage Repertory will continue Steppenwolf's commitment to support the city's vibrant storefront theater scene. After a highly successful inaugural repertory in Winter 2010, Steppenwolf looks forward to broadening and deepening the conversation with Chicago's theater companies and their audiences. To this end, Steppenwolf will produce the work of three different Chicago companies in rotating repertory from February - April 2011. We are now accepting proposals.

Types of Projects:

We are looking for projects from companies with a track record of production excellence and innovative approaches to attracting young audiences. The companies themselves need not be artists of a particular generation; nor do we place restrictions on budget size or how long companies have been in existence. Each company must be willing to work in rotating repertory in a spirit of collaboration.

  • Millenial Generation. By young audience, we are particularly interested in the Millenial generation - which we define as being roughly 20-35 years old. We are looking for projects that seek to engage a Millenial generation audience in unique ways; project proposals should speak specifically to this aspect of the repertory's goals.

  • Season Theme. We welcome projects that intersect with our 2010-2011 Season theme, which is:

We live in public space. We live in private space. What happens when the door between them opens? Our public/private self. It's an animating tension in each of us. A landscape both familiar and strange. Home to our darkness and our brilliance. Steppenwolf's 2010-2011 season: five stories that navigate the fluid borders of our public/private self and illuminate the mysterious ways each acts upon the other.

  • Extant or New Works. The projects can be extant or newly-developed works. We are open to a variety of aesthetic approaches. We are not interested in remounts of already-produced projects.
