THE GARAGE REP PROGRAM
2011-2012 Garage Rep Steppenwolf's Garage Rep program, now in its third year, presents the work of three emerging Chicago Companies under Steppenwolf's banner. Steppenwolf invites applicationsfrom storefront companies around the city to produce a new project on the subject of our season theme. We provide three chosen companies mentorship in areas of marketing, production, artistic vision, dramaturgy, producing, and fundraising. With this program, we aim to learn from the next generation about what excites them; we aim to introduce Steppenwolf audiences to their work and their audiences to ours; and above all, we aim to contribute to the ongoing vibrancy of Chicago's theater ecology.
We are now accepting proposals for Steppenwolf's Garage Rep in 2012. (PDF)
TYPES OF PROJECTS
We are looking for projects from companies with a track record of production excellence and innovative approaches to attracting young audiences. The companies theselves need not be artists of a particular generation; nor do we place restrictions on budget size or how long companies have been in existence. Each company must be willing to work in rotating repertory in a spirit of collaboration.
MILLENIAL GENERATION
By young audience, we are particularly interested in the Millenial generation—which we define as being roughly 20-35 years old. We are looking for projects that seek to engage a Millenial generation audience in unique ways; project proposals should speak specifically to this aspect of the repertory's goals.
SEASON THEME
We welcome projects that intersect with our 2011-2012 Season theme, which is: For Steppenwolf's 2011/12 season, we are exploring what happens when everyday lives are touched by war.In each of our five plays, war exerts a pressure—sometimes centrally, sometimes obliquely—on the lives of the characters. We are moved to engage a conversation about the spectre of war because war is a deep presence in our contemporary life in America. Throughout these stories, war incites a purpose, a deep need in its characters that moves them into action. These dispatches from the homefront are alive with the humor, the tenderness and the urgency of lives struggling to find home.
Extant or New Works
The projects can be extant or newly-developed works. New plays with an existing draft and proposals of devised work are welcome. We are open to a variety of aesthetic approaches. We are not interested in remounts of already-produced projects.
